Diamonds worth Rs6 crore were stolen from the office of Hitesh Patel at Pancharatna building, Opera House, early on Tuesday.

Senior inspector NR Mali of DB Marg police station said, “Duplicate keys were used to gain entry. We have registered a complaint under Sections 454, 457 and 380 of the IPC.”

Patel, 28, proprietor of Aarshit Gems, stated in his complaint that he had set up the diamond trading company in December at Room No541, fifth floor, Pancharatna Building. Twice in succession, on October 10 and 13, Patel received consignments of cut and polished diamonds from his Surat factory. He locked them up in his office drawer. On October 15, Patel closed his office around 7.30 pm and went to Sahar airport to drop his father.

The next day, he returned to office around 9.30 am, and was shocked to find the diamonds missing from his drawer. He immediately lodged a complaint with police. “Preliminary investigations hint at an insiders job. One of the employees has gone missing after the incident. Another man, who introduced the missing employee to Patel, too has disappeared. Search is on to nab the two,” said Mali.

“A dog squad and personnel from the fingerprint bureau checked the office thoroughly for clues. We have taken fingerprints of the five employees who reported on Tuesday,” addedMali.
